Gauging Household Wire Gauges

Sometimes it's hard to tell what size wire is sticking out of an electrical box when you go to repair something or install a new outlet.

  • 14 gauge household wire is the thickness of a dime (and is used for 15 amp circuits).
  • 12 gauge wire is the thickness of a nickel (and is used for 20 amp circuits).
