Adding Quick Connect Regulator to Weber Q

Adding Quick Connect Regulator to Weber Q

I have a

Weber Q series Grill

.  (Mine is a Q220, which is the older version of the Q2200.).   I like this grill a lot because it is simple, compact, and cooks well.  I typically use it from the small, 1lb "throwaway" propane tanks (the little green ones) or by hooking it up to a standard 20lb propane tank using a

hose designed for that purpose

.  Both of these sources are "high pressure" sources of gas, but the Weber's in-built pressure regulator steps down that pressure so it's useable.

My RV, like many, carries a propane supply on-board, with built-in regulators that steps the gas pressure down for use by the onboard systems like the stove and refrigerator.  My RV also has a quick connect gas port on the outside, for connecting a

generator

or low-pressure RV grill.  Since this external quick connect port comes "after" the RV's regulator, it is a "low pressure" port, and it can't be piped directly to my Weber Grill, since the grill has it's own regulator which would choke off the already low pressure to be too low for use.

So, to use my grill with the low pressure port on my RV, I need to remove the Weber's pressure regulator-- but I want to preserve the ability to reattach the regulator should I choose to use a high pressure source of propane

--which is what I would do any time I'm using the grill without my RV.

Here's what I did:

To provide a direct connection to either the RV hose so I can enjoy LOW pressure propane sources:

  1. I removed the flame control knob, valve, and regulator from the grill.

  2. I separated the regulator from the plate that was holding it in place.

  3. From the flame control valve, I used a Viair 90001 1/8" Female BSP - 1/4" Male NPT Adaptor linked to a 1/4" x 1/4" Female/Femail Pipe Coupling and then screwed on the male half of a Camco 59853 Propane Quick Connect Kit.

To make it so I could add the regulator back onto the grill whenever I wanted and enjoy HIGH pressure propane sources:

  1. I added a female quick connect port to the flame control valve, using a Reducing Hex Nipple, 1/4" Male x 1/8" Male and the female half of a Camco 59853 Propane Quick Connect Kit.

So the net result is this, where I can use either one or both parts to accomplish my goals:

If you want to see the hose I'll use to connect the grill to the RV low pressure propane port, I have a post about that as well.Airstream Nerds did a video showing a similar install.  You can see that video here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSDRTsgJCIg
