Invest in your Points of Contact

In any endeavor--whether that's using tools to fix something, riding a bicycle, carrying a pack, or decorating a room--there are points of contact (I'm talking physical contact) between you and the thing you are doing.  I'm a big believer in investing in those points of contact, because not only are they how you experience the word, they often influence how well you perform/control/influence/enjoy what you're doing. For example:

  • Cyclists should invest in gloves, saddles, shoes, and shorts.
  • Computer workers should invest in keyboards, mice, chairs, and eyeglasses.
  • Electricians should have an AWESOME Philips head screwdriver.
  • Barkeeps should find that bottle opener that speaks to them.
  • Hikers should spare no expense on shoes or backpacks.
  • Painters should get the best brushes.

You get the idea.  Seems simple, but I can't tell you how often I see this principle being forgotten--and how often I forget it myself.(OH... and once your feet stop growing, there is no excuse to not invest in quality footwear. Shoes last... and they are the primary point of contact between you and the entire world!)
